How the math works

Nielsen data puts the average US adult at 4+ hours/day of recreational screen time. Separately, Harvard Health research indicates blue light exposure delays sleep onset by roughly 30 minutes for every 2+ hours of evening screen use — a real physiological effect, independent of what's actually being watched. The tool projects your total lifetime hours forward, converts the opportunity cost at your hourly rate, and converts the same hour total into an equivalent number of books (at ~6 hours/book) to make the scale concrete.

These two costs — lost time and disrupted sleep — compound in the background separately; even screen time that doesn't displace anything else productive can still degrade sleep quality through the blue-light mechanism alone.
