How the math works
Total investment = course/tutor cost + (study hours × your hourly rate). Lifetime benefit = annual salary bonus × years of career remaining — which means the same bonus percentage is worth dramatically more to someone with 30 years of career left than someone with 3, purely because it's collected for longer.
The single biggest variable isn't the cost side — course prices and study hours are easy to estimate. It's whether a real, documented salary premium actually applies to your specific field and role. Many roles have no measurable salary effect from language proficiency at all, however personally valuable the skill remains — assuming a bonus without checking is the most common way this calculation gets overly optimistic.
Where this doesn't apply
- Non-financial motivations (enrichment, travel, family) are legitimate reasons that fall outside this financial framework entirely.
- Many bilingual pay premiums, where they exist, require a specific proficiency threshold — partial progress may not unlock any benefit yet.
- A career change can add or remove the relevant benefit entirely if it moves you out of a role where the skill applies.
