Where the two famous numbers actually sit
Josh Kaufman’s roughly 20-hour figure for basic functional competence sits at the very beginning of this curve — closer to Dreyfus level 1, sometimes edging into level 2 depending on the skill. It’s a genuinely useful, achievable target for someone who wants to go from zero ability to “can do this reasonably” in a short, motivating timeframe.
K. Anders Ericsson’s roughly 10,000-hour figure sits at the opposite end — Dreyfus level 5, world-class, intuitive expert mastery. This is an entirely different goal than Kaufman’s, requiring not just far more time but, per Ericsson’s own research, a specific quality of practice: deliberate, structured, with feedback and progressive challenge, not simply hours logged passively.
Why “deliberate” is the word that gets dropped
