URL Encoder & Decoder

Last updated:

Percent-encode or decode text — component mode for query params, full mode for a complete URL with reserved characters left alone.

How it works

  • Component mode (encodeURIComponent) escapes every URL-reserved character — : / ? # & = and friends — so it’s safe to drop the result into a query string value, a path segment, or a form field without it accidentally being parsed as URL structure.
  • Full URL mode (encodeURI) assumes the input is already a complete URL and leaves reserved characters alone, only escaping things like spaces and unicode that would otherwise break the URL. Using component mode on a full URL double-encodes the :// and query separators — a common bug this mode avoids.
  • Decoding auto-picks the matching mode; mixing them up on decode can silently leave some characters still encoded, so match whichever mode was used to encode.

Runs entirely in your browser using the native encodeURIComponent / encodeURI APIs — nothing you enter is uploaded, logged, or stored.
